residence house design

Architect Michael Rantilla of Freelon Group is the creative force behind the Rantilla Residence, an admirable example of modern architecture where nature and industry come together in harmony. Located near Raleigh, North Carolina, the wonderful wooded sloped terrain presents both this home’s appealing and its problematic characteristics. Between the zoning restrictions, a stream and a steep slope, the architect designed this cool three-storey house with three very distinct volumes, each facing a different direction and cantilevered between each other and the open air. Apart from looking cool, this innovative floor plan establishes multiple layered outdoor living areas (one occupying the roof of each volume, and a shaded refuge beneath them) not to mention the awesome deck that sprawls into the outdoors from the main level. Inside, this modern house is decidedly “industrial” with the prevalent presence of concrete walls and floors complemented by sleek, urban materials like stainless steel and huge walls of glass
